Background
"Our objective has been to
complete a compendium of some of the best flies for Trout
fishing around the world. All the flies have been filmed
especially for this CD and are presented exactly as they were
created and without digital enhancements."
People This
CD has been put together by 4 people. Three of them are keen fishermen and one
doesn’t understand what they are talking about!
Roger
Davies The
initiator of this project. It was his determination to develop
the best possible library of flies from some of the world’s finest fly tiers in
the world and he has taken this project from an idea in a back bedroom, into one
of the best resources for fly fishermen anywhere.

Robin
is one of England’s top casting instructors - a lifelong
enthusiast for the sport, providing personal tuition
to many fisherman. His credentials include resident instructor
for the Royal Warrant Holders Association and teachingassignments for the Game Conservancy. His technicalassistance
in putting together the data on this CD was vital.
Steve
Edge Prophet, madman and wanderer who is as
passionateabout
his fishing as he is about his art and design. Steve
is the creative director of a graphic design studio in
London,
whose wealth of experience was critical in putting all elements of the project
together in the most creative and focused way.
Stephen
Milton BSc ARCS MBA (The odd one out) He is the technologist. He helped start it
up and makessure
that it works. He doesn’t understand the appeal of fishing, but immediately
recognised the beauty of the flies themselves and the value of capturing the
very best pictures of them.
Fly
Tiers
Without
the help of some of the worlds finest fly tiers this project could never have
happened, and we are all grateful to them for their
skill and dedication. It is great to be able to give them the recognition that
they deserve, which is why every fly on this CD is attributed to the tier who
supplied it.
Photography A
specially adapted Nikon digital camera with a 3.4m pixel plate was used to make
the pictures.
The flies where set up in the
centre of a light diffuser and the lens setting and shutter
speed were adjusted to provide the necessary depth of focus at
close range. Each fly took an average of 15 minutes to film,
though many of them have been filmed dozens of times until a
satisfactory quality was achieved. None of the images have
been digitally enhanced. You see them the way the tiers tied
them.
Each
of the pictures is held as a high quality print ready image. These have then
been processed to create jpg images of the necessary size and at a resolution of
92 dpi for use on the screen. The Images are held on the CD and are not loaded
into the computer. This causes a slight delay when viewing, but is an important
security consideration.
Information Much
of the information on each fly has been supplied by the tier. This has then been
supplemented from research within our extensive library of Fly Fishing
literature. The copy has then been reviewed by Robin
Elwes
(a well know figure in the industry and a top fly fishing instructor). Using an
on-line database to make the data available to the tiers, and to the editorial
team, the content was then again checked. Great efforts have been made to ensure
the information is accurate, but we are unable to offer any guarantee as to its
correctness.
